National Theater

Representing the European aspirations of the liberal coffee-growing society, the National Theater was built by the end of the nineteenth century, with a strong tax on coffee production. The monumental architecture, painting and sculpture works of famous artists, mainly Italian. The taste and refinement in all finishes of this national jewel, which stand in sharp contrast with the underdevelopment of the country in that time, to the point that it was said in Europe that Costa Rica was a village encircling the National Theater. But voilĂ ! The National Theater is still there, and the village has somewhat changed.
